The Merritt Parkway

The Merritt Parkway was the first roadway without stoplights linking NYC to Connecticut. Famous for both its landscape design and ornamental Art Deco and Art Moderne bridges, it was one of the largest public work projects of its time.

The bridges were designed by George Dunkelberger, an architect and junior draftsman at the Connecticut Highway Department. Each dedicated to a specific theme, depicted with a unique design.
